Martyred freedom fighters remembered in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Dec 5, 2023 (BSS) - Martyred freedom fighters were remembered with due respect and gratitude at a memorial meeting on Khamar Dhanaruha High School premises under Muktinagar Union of Saghata upazila in the district.

Freedom fighters said there were two bastions (Ghati) of Pakistan occupation forces at fulchhari police station and Teestamukh railway ferry ghat.

The freedom fighters led by company commander Rostam Ali Khandaker took a plan to liberate Fulchhari police headquarters from the hands of the occupation forces.

Then the freedom fighters were divided into four groups and took position around the police station at the late night of December 03 in 1971.

In the face of fierce battle, the Pakistan army was forced to flee the police station and took shelter in nearby Gobindi Embankment area under Saghata Thana of then Gaibandha sub division.

Following the occupation forces, the FFs moved to the area and took position there.

At one stage, a massive face to face fight took place between the FFs and the Pakistan army on December 4.

In the fight, 27 occupation soldiers were killed and 5 FFs identifying as Jahedul Haque Badal, Afzal Hossain, Kabez Ali, Osman Gani and Abdus Sobhan embraced martyrdom.

The following day, the martyred freedom fighters were buried on the ground of Dhanaruha Primary School under Muktinagar union of Saghata Thana on December 05 at the initiatives of the locals and the freedom fighters.

Later, the Pak forces left Fulchhari Thana area.

To remember the five martyred freedom fighters, the memorial meeting was held yesterday.

Additional deputy commissioner (Development) Sushanta Kumar Mahato addressed as the chief guest and additional police super Abdullah Al-Mamun spoke as the special guest.

Presided over by Saghata UNO Yasahak Ali, the function was also addressed among others by assistant commissioner (Land) Mono ranjan Barmon, Officer in Charge of Saghata Thana Rakib Hasan, freedom fighters Goutam Chandra Modok, Abdul Jalil and Zabed Ali.

Earlier, glowing tributes were paid by placing wreaths at the graves of the martyred freedom fighters.
