GAIBANDHA, Mar 08, 2024 (BSS)- International Women’s Day-2024 was celebrated in the district as elsewhere in the country and the globe today with a call to ensure overall development of the women folk and their empowerment in society.
This year’s theme of the day is 'Narir Somo Odhikar, Somo Sujog-Egiye Nite Hok Biniyog'.
Marking the day, the district administration and Department of Women Affairs including SKS Foundation chalked out the elaborate programmes.
In the morning, a post rally discussion meeting was held at the conference room of the deputy commissioner (DC) here with deputy director of the department Nargis Jahan in the chair.
Additional district magistrate Md. Mashiur Rahman attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest.
Additional police super Abdullah Al- Mamun and women leader Parul Begum addressed the function, among others.
The speakers underscored the need for ensuring dignity of women and safety in work places in all spheres of society.
Chief guest Md. Mashiur Rahman in his speeches said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had implemented many programmes in last 15 years aimed at building a welfare state for the women folk.
Apart from it, SKS Foundation, a Gaibandha based non –government organization, also chalked out the programmes in hard to reach chars under Fulchhari upazila of the district marking the day under Community based Resilience Women’s Empowerment and Action (CREA) project funded by Manusher Jonno Foundation.
At noon, a big human chain was formed on the ground of Chandanswar High School located at Fazlupur char of Fulchhari upazila in the district with assistant teacher of the school Hasan Ali in the chair. Female vice chairman of the upazila parishad Anjuara Begum alias Mariee addressed the function as the chief guest.
Project coordinator Lovely Khatun, member of upazila climate action group Belal Hossain, civil society members Jahidul Islam and Anju Begum spoke at the event among others.
The speakers urged all to work together to push forward the backward char people towards desired development.
They demanded of the government to give the recognition of the char women as farmers, pay fair wages to the women labours, involve the underprivileged char women in various state-run facilities including ICT.
A large number of teenagers, women and people of different professions participated in the human chain and discussion meeting holding play-cards, festoons, banners inscribed with various awareness messages.
