GOPALGANJ, Mar 23, 2024 (BSS) - A local Awami League (AL) leader and special public prosecutor of District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal (Special PP) was killed after being hit by a motorcycle on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Mandartala area under Sadar upazila of the district last night.
The deceased was identified as Ranjit Kumar Barai Gama, 70, son of Kalipad Barai, a resident of Rupahati village under Tungipara upazila of the district.
He was the vice-president of Gopalganj district unit of Awami League and also special public prosecutor of District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
The accident occurred in the area when Ranjit Kumar Gama was returning home after visiting the Sheikh Fazlul Karim Salim Law College in Mandartola area, which is being constructed at his initiative. On the way, a speeding motorbike hit him around 5pm on Friday, leaving him critically injured, Inspector of Bhatiapara Highway Police Station Md. Abul Hasem Majumdar said.
He was taken to Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital. When his physical condition deteriorated there the doctors referred him to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for better treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital around 8pm last night, he said.
The body was handed over to the family members after post-mortem today (Saturday) officer-in-charge (OC) of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Mohammad Anisur Rahman said.
A case was filed in this connection, the OC added.
