CHAPAINAWABGANJ, March 25, 2024 (BSS) - The courts here have sentenced two persons to life-term imprisonment in two separate cases in the district.
Special Tribunal-1 and Senior Session Judge Md. Adeeb Ali awarded Zakaria Islam to life-term imprisonment in a case filed over possessing fire arms on Sunday afternoon, court sources said.
Zakaria, 20, was identified as son of Tofazzal Islam of Dadpur Purbo-Uttarpara in Bargachi union of Rajshahi district.
According to the prosecution story, acting on a tip-off, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted an overnight raid on the Adda-Rohonpur road at Rangamati Naoda Mission village in Rohonpur union of Gomostapur upazila in the district on December 29, 2021.
During the drive, the elite force arrested Zakaria Islam with a pistol, two one shooter guns, a magazine and two bullets.
RAB filed a case against him with Gomostapur police station next day.
Investigating officer (IO) of the case Sub-inspector Md. Sohel Rana submitted the charge sheet against Zakaria to the court on February 10, 2022.
After hearing the witnesses, the judge handed down the verdict yesterday.
On the other hand, Additional Session Judge-1 Md. Rabiul Islam sentenced Golam Rasul to life-term imprisonment in a drug case on the same day.
The court also fined him Tk. 20,000, in default, he has to suffer six months more imprisonment.
Golam Rasul, 25, is the son of Robiul Alam Robu of Helachi village under Bholahat upazila in the district.
The prosecution story said RAB conducted a raid in a mango orchard at Kanchanpur village near Mokarrampur Bridge in Gomostapur upazila of the district on March 23, 2016 and arrested Golam Rasul and Baitul Islam Golap with 140 grams of heroin.
An inspector of RAB-5 filed a case with Gomostapur police station against the duo on the same day.
IO of the case Sub-inspector Rezaul Karim submitted the charge sheet to the court on May 12, 2016 against them.
After a long hearing, the court pronounced the verdict with acquittal of Baitul Islam as the charges against him were not proved.
