KHULNA, April 4, 2024 (BSS) - A fire that broke out at Khulna's Salam Jute Mill in the Jabusa area of the Naihati Union of Rupsha upazila was brought under control, a fire official said today.
"A total of 16 firefighting units including two of Bangladesh Navy dowsed the flame in their hectic several hours' effort after the mill caught fire on Wednesday afternoon," said Faruk Hossain Shikder, assistant director of the Khulna Fire Service Office.
Around 750 tonnes of export-oriented jute products, 35,000 maunds of raw Jute, 700 metric tonnes of yarn and huge types of machinery of the mill worth about Taka 125 crore were fully gutted in the fire before extinguishing at night, MMA Salam, owner of the Salam Jute Mill told BSS.
He, however, said the real extent of damage in fire could be ascertained following a thorough survey that may take a week.
He also said the Jute mill has Taka 50 crore insurance at Continental Insurance Company.
The firemen suspected an electrical short circuit under the fire being originated at a machine room of the mill.
Shikder said the fire rapidly spread and engulfed nearby godowns and other machine rooms of the jute.
He even could not identify the cause of the fire and total damage from the blaze.
