Over 1.87 lakh children to get Vitamin A capsules in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ, May 30, 2024 (BSS) - A total of 1,87,404 children of under-five
age group will be fed with vitamin A Plus capsules in seven upazilas
including two municipalities of the district on June 1.

On the day, the National Vitamin A Plus Campaign 2024 will be conducted in 65
unions and two municipalities in seven upazilas of the district
simultaneously, Dr. Mohammad Moksedul Momin, civil surgeon of the district,
told BSS today.

The campaign will be conducted under the auspices of the Public Health and
Nutrition Institute and National Nutrition Services under the Ministry of
Health and Family Planning with the assistance of UNICEF.

The Civil Surgeon said: "We have completed all necessary preparations to make
the National Vitamin A Plus campaign a success."

He highlighted the importance of continuation of Vitamin A supplementations
for under-five babies to prevent mal-nutritional blindness especially night
blindness, bitot's spots and corneal lesions.

"Immunizaion of the under-five babies with Vitamin A Plus capsules is crucial
for strengthening their immune system and disease resistance capacity for
healthier growth," he added.

The Civil Surgeon Office said a total of 3,190 health workers and volunteers
will provide Vitamin A Plus capsules at 1,588 centres in seven upazilas and
two municipalities on Saturday next from 8 am to 4 pm.

Under the programme, the health department has taken adequate measures to
provide necessary vitamin-A capsules (blue colour ) to 21,771 babies of six
months to 11 months and vitamin-A capsules (red colour) to 1,65,633 children
of 12 months to 49 months age group, said EPI Superintendent of District
Civil Surgeon Office Moniruzzaman.

The Civil Surgeon specially called upon the parents to bring their kids to
the outreach centres with a full stomach to feed them Vitamin A capsule as
immunization with an empty stomach might cause nausea.
