GAIBANDHA, Aug 1, 2024 (BSS) - The National Fisheries WeeK-2024 has begun in the district as elsewhere in the country on Wednesday with a call to boost production of fishes through promoting sustainable fish production technologies.
This year's theme of the week is "Machhe Varbo Moder Desh, Smart Hobe Bangladesh".
To mark the week, district administration and district fisheries office jointly chalked out elaborate programmes.
In the morning on Wednesday, an inaugural function was held at the conference room of the district fisheries office here with additional deputy commissioner (ADC-ICT, Education, Human Resources Development) Sharmin Akhter in the chair.
Local lawmaker and also a member of Standing Committee on the Ministry of Public Administration Shah Sarwar Kabir attended the function as the chief guest while Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Krishibid Khorshed Alam Sarker spoke as the special guest.
Sadar upazila livestock officer Tarun Kumar Dutta and fish farmer Amiruzzaman Misti also addressed the function among others.
District fisheries officer Md. Marzan Sarker delivered a welcome speech and highlighted the overall scenario on fish production of the district and the country.
Speaking on the occasion lawmaker Shah Sarwar Kabir stressed the need for enhancing fish production in the open-water bodies to meet the protein deficiency and change the socio-economic condition of the fish farmers with creating employment opportunities for the youths.
Fish production had already increased to a greater extent through the best use of existing natural resources in the country for pragmatic initiatives during the tenure of the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he added.
Later, the lawmaker inaugurated the week in the district and formally distributed crests to three men who played significant role in developing the fisheries sector.
Earlier, he also released fingerlings of carp fishes in the pond of Gaibandha Municipality.
