Severe flood kills 4 in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, Aug 23, 2024 (BSS) - A devastating flood triggered by heavy rainfall and onrush of water from upstream killed four people in Chattogram leaving nearly five lakh people stranded.  

The victims were identified as Md Roni, 17, son of Abu Bakar, hailed from Raza Nagar union of Rangunia upazila, Microbus driver Ziaur Rahman Saqib, 22, son of Jashim Uddin, hailed from Hazhazari upazila, Md Sami, 07, son of Nurul Alam, hailed from Kazir Hat area under Fatikchari upazila and another unidentified body aged about 21 years was recovered from Haitkandi village of Mirsarai upazila of the district this noon.
Of them Ziaur Rahman and Sami died of electrocution.

Chattogram district administration sources said at least five lakh people in Fatikchari, Hathajari, Rangunia and Raujan upazilas are trapped by flood waters.

Hathazari upazila administration sources said as the dam of Halda River was broken in the border area of Hathazari and Fatikchari this morning, water started entering the locality with a strong current.

"Many villages were inundated in these two upazilas. Besides, electricity supply and vehicular movement was halted due to the rise of water level," the source added.

Some villages of Farhadabad Union of Hathazari, Kazirhat, Nazirhat, Narayaranhat, Sundarpur of Phatikchari upazila were flooded.

Meanwhile, the water of Feni River and Muhuri River is flowing above the danger limit.

Besides, lower areas of Mirsrai Municipality, Zorarganj, Ichakhali, Katchra, Durgapur, Mithanala, Khayachra, Osmanpur and Wahedpur Union and several villages were flooded.

Engineer Shaukat Ibn Saheed, XCN of Water Development Board said the water of Feni river is two meters above the danger level at some points and Halda river water is flowing over one meter.

According to information from Chattogram Divisional Office of Water Development Board, normal danger limit at Ramgarh Point of Feni River is 16.90 meters. At present 18.90 meters of water was recorded at this point at 11 am on Friday.
