Two RU students assaulted for taking part in movement

RAJSHAHI, Aug 28, 2024 (BSS) - Leaders and workers of Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and its students' wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) assaulted two students of Rajshahi University (RU) as they took part in the Anti-discrimination student movement.

The students are Zahid Hassan of Urdu department and Anik Ahmed of Information Science and Library Management department.

BCL and AL men were against him due to his involvement with social activities, including raising voice against market syndication, said Zahid while talking to BSS over phone today, adding, they became more furious when he took part in the anti-discrimination movement.

On August 25, a group of people, including Upazila BCL Joint Secretary Arman Ali and AL leader Sabuj Hossain assaulted him indiscriminately at one stage of altercation.

They also tried to strangle him, leaving him in a critical condition, he said.

He was immediately taken to Raninagar Upazila Health Complex.

Anik Ahmed said his involvement with the anti-discrimination students' movement was the reason behind the attack on him.

On August 25, the BCL and AL men intercepted him on his way to home from a local market and assaulted him randomly.

"They also attacked me with an axe and left me in an unconscious state. Later, local people rescued and took me to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital," Anik said.

They could not file cases against the attackers due to fear, they said.
