KHULNA, Sept 29, 2024 (BSS) - Journalist leaders in Khulna today demanded release of Mahmudur Rahman, former acting editor of daily Amar Desh, within 24 hours otherwise tougher programmes will be taken.
The journalist leaders made the demand at a protest rally in front of Khulna Press Club here today with President of Metropolitan Union of Journalists (MUJ) Md Anisuzzaman in the chair.
MUJ and family members of Amar Desh (Amar Desh Paribar) jointly organized the protest procession and rally.
Assistant secretary of Bangladesh Federal Journalists Union (BFUJ) addressed the rally as the chief guest. MUJ treasurer Abdur Razzak Rana conducted it.
The rally was addressed, among others, by ex-BFUJ vice president Md Rashedul Islam, ex-executive member Sheikh Didarul Alam and H M Alauddin, acting general secretary of MUJ Abul Hasan Himaloy, Editor of Dainik Khulnanchal Mizanur Rahman and member of Khulna Press Club convening committee Ashraful Islam Nur.
Earlier, a court in Dhaka today sent Mahmudur Rahman to jail in a case lodged for allegedly attempting to abduct and murder ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed Joy in the US in 2015.
Police on August 3 in 2015 filed the case with Paltan Police Station and on February 19 in 2018 filed a charge-sheet against five including Mahmudur Rahman.
The court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Nur on August 17, 2023, convicted and sentenced five people including Mahmudur Rahman to seven-year imprisonment in the case.
Mahmudur was tried in absentia in the case.
