RANGPUR, Oct 16, 2024 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced two persons to life term imprisonment for possessing 270 bottles of contraband phensidyl and three kilograms of ganja in Gangachara upazila of the district.
The court also fined the convicts Taka 10,000, each or to suffer another six-month jail term, in default.
Judge Md Haider Ali of the Special Judge (District & Sessions Judge) Court of Rangpur announced the verdict in his courtroom in absentia of the convicts Md Dochir Uddin and Mohubar Rahman.
Md Dochir Uddin is the son of Abdul Jabbar and Mohubar Rahman is the son of late Akbor Ali of village Joyram Ojha in Gangachara upazila of the district.
The prosecution story in brief said, a police team of Gangachara Model Police Station raided the house of convict Mohubar Rahman in the village and arrested them with 270 bottles of phensidyl and three kilograms of ganja on July 2, 2011.
Police filed a case against the arrested persons with Gangachara Model Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act, 2018 in this connection.
After the investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against the accused in the court.
After the testimony and cross-examination of witnesses in that case, Judge Md Haider Ali found the accused persons guilty under the section 19 (1) of the Act and announced the verdict against them.
Besides, the two defendants were sentenced to two more years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Taka 2,000 each in two other sections of the Act.
“The court issued arrest warrants against the absconding convicts and ordered that both the sentences will be effective from the date of arrest,” Special Public Prosecutor of the court Advocate Joynal Abedin Orange told reporters.
