Speakers for unified work to mitigate climate risks in Barind

RAJSHAHI, Oct 27, 2024 (BSS) - Speakers at a function here today stressed united work of government and private organizations for climate risks mitigation in Barind region as the adverse impact of climate change poses serious threat to the living and livelihood conditions of the people.

So, all the public and private organizations concerned should come forward and work together to overcome the climate problems with pragmatic steps, they said.

Civil society members and development activists came up with the observation while addressing the project orientation and risk assessment workshop titled "Climate change in Rajshahi and its adjacent areas" here.

On behalf of its 'Cultivating Chance project', Association for Community Development (ACD) organized the workshop at its conference hall supported by Oxfam in Bangladesh.

Professor Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan from the department of Geology and Mining at Rajshahi University addressed the workshop as focal person disseminating his expertise on the issue.

Senior Program Officer of Oxfam to Bangladesh Zerin Ahmed, Superintending Engineer of Barind Multipurpose development Authority Shariful Haque, ACD Director Sharmin Subrina, former Chairman of Rajshahi Education Board Prof Dipkendra Nath Das and Principal Scientific Officer of Fruit Research Station Dr Shafiqul Islam also spoke.

The meeting was told that the project is being implemented in the region for protecting the marginalized families, particularly the ethnic minority communities, through climate resilient actions.

The project is also intended to allocate more climate finance for adaptation, training communities to access and manage climate finance and advocating for a gender responsive budget.

In four separate group discussions, the participants put forward a set of recommendations on how to protect the marginalized families from the adverse impacts of climate change through promoting adaptive and resilient measures.
