RANGPUR, Nov 30, 2024 (BSS) – To meet the nutritional needs of the population in building a healthy and talented nation, all concerned should take adequate steps to increase fish sanctuaries to boost fish production.
“For this purpose, indigenous fish is very important in the food list,” Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter said at a public rally, held at Kochua Bazar of Gangachara upazila here this afternoon as the chief guest.
The Gangachara upazila administration, the Teesta River Protection Committee and the Marginal Farmers’ and Fishermen Samity’ of Gangachara upazila organised the rally for local marginal farmers and fishermen.
Gangachara Upazila Executive Officer Nahid Tamanna presided over the rally participated by hundreds of local fishermen, marginal farmers and journalists.
President of the Teesta River Protection Committee Faridul Islam Farid, Director of Rangpur Divisional Livestock Office Dr Md Nazrul Islam and Deputy Director of the Department of Fisheries for Rangpur Md Saifuddin Yahiya addressed the event as special guests.
The fisheries and livestock adviser said that Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute is constantly working on how to increase fish production in the country to meet the protein and nutrition demand of the population.
She said the fishermen should have to temporarily stop fishing. During this time, the government provides them with assistance, she added.
“To increase fish production, it is not enough for the district administration to work to stop illegal fishing nets, everyone has to work together,” she added.
