MEHERPUR, Dec 3, 2024 (BSS) - A memorial meeting was held at the conference room of the deputy commissioner (DC) office here today remembering the martyrs and the injured of July-August mass uprising.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sifat Mehnaz presided over the function this morning.
Civil Surgeon of the district Dr. Mohi Uddin Ahmed, former member of parliament (MP) of Meherpur-1 constituency and District unit president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Masud Arun, former member of parliament (MP) of Meherpur-2 constituency and District BNP General Secretary Amjad Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police Kamrul Ahsan, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Roni Alam Nur, valiant freedom fighter Captain Abdul Malek, District unit Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Taj Uddin Ahmed, District BNP Vice-President Alamgir Khan Chatu, Municipal BNP President Jahangir Biswas, among others, spoke.
The speakers said everyone's right to speak must be ensured. "The first condition of democracy is the right to vote. We want to get back that right."
The anti-discrimination student movement of July-August is an important part of history and the sacrifices of the martyrs and the injured are inspirations to move forward, they added.
Injured in the anti-discrimination student movement Khandaker Muiz Uddin and Hasnat Zaman, district convener of the anti-discrimination student movement Imtiaz Uddin, its member secretary Mojahidul Islam, joint convener Shaon Sheikh, among others, spoke at the event commemorating the martyrs.
Leaders of various political parties, families of those injured in the anti-discrimination movement, journalists, students and people from different walks of life, among others, were present.
