TANGAIL, Jan 04, 2025 (BSS)- With about 274 causalities in 153 accidents Tangail roads turned as one of the grievous death trap for commuters.
At least 135 persons were killed and 139 injured in those accidents in the district last year. Road accidents are being occurred almost every day, police, BRTA officials and local people said.
They attributed the accidents to faulty transports, high speed, ignorance of traffic rules by the drivers, narrow highways, low speed vehicles on roads, reckless driving of motorcyclists, and poor knowledge of the drivers about the traffic rules.
Most of the victims are motorcyclists, juveniles and youths, the sources said.
Eight people were killed in January, 18 in February, 21 in March, 13 in April, six in May, 19 in June, eight in July, three in August, 10 in September, 13 in October, six in November and 10 in December, according to police.
Mohibuzzaman Mukta, general secretary of Nirapad Sarak Chai, Tangail district unit said most of the roads of the district are now death traps. Road accidents are being occurred almost every day.
Number of motorcycle is increasing day by day and the road accidents are also increasing at the same time, he said.
Dr Md Tuhin Talukder, senior consultant of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital told BSS that most of the persons who came to the hospitals with accidental injuries were victims of motorcycle accidents.
BRTA sources said they have received applications for financial support from 51 families who lost their near and dear ones or sustained injuries in road accidents.
