Nearly 8,000 people mostly school students die road accident every year

RANGPUR, Jan 15, 2025 (BSS) – Nearly 8,000 people mostly school students die road accident every year across the country, police said.

“About 7,500 to 8,000 people die in road accidents across Bangladesh every year and large proportion of them are students,” said Mohammad Tariqul Islam, Superintendent of Highway Police, Rangpur Region here today.

During a power point presentation, he revealed that major reason for road accidents was the drivers' failure and not to follow traffic laws properly and lack of awareness of students and pedestrians in various areas including road crossings.
 
He made the presentation on "Highway beat policing meeting to prevent road accidents" at an awareness raising meeting on road safety and traffic law with students of Fazilpur Bilateral High School in Taraganj Highway Police Station area.

The Highway Police Rangpur Region organized this meeting to make school students aware of the causes of road accidents and to raise awareness about road safety and traffic laws to prevent road accidents.

Highlighting the causes of road accident, he urged students to be aware of road accident prevention and suggested young students to refrain from riding motorcycles if they do not have a driving license and are not 18 years old.
 
In this connection, he said the Highway Police is active on the highway to prevent any sorts of accidents. Keeping in mind that an accident is a lifelong cry, he encouraged school children to follow the traffic rules on the highway and on the road as well.
 
In addition, he briefed students about traffic laws and motivated them to prevent drugs and child marriage. Later, the Highway Police also answered various questions of students.
 
Officer-in-Charge of Taraganj Highway Police Station Md Mostafizur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Taraganj Local Police Station and the Principal of Fazilpur Bilateral High School also spoke on the occasion.
 
More than 200 students and teachers from of Fazilpur Bilateral High School participated in the programme.
 
The students and teachers present requested the Highway Police to continue such awareness-raising initiatives in all educational institutions across Rangpur region of Highway Police.
 
They said teachers and students will cooperate with the Highway Police in creating a safe highway.
