Banned BCL leader held in Rangpur murder case

RANGPUR, Jan 29, 2025 (BSS) - Police arrested Al-Amin Hossain, a leader of 
banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), for his alleged 
involvement in the murder case of Mahmudul Hasan Munna, who was killed in the 
anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur. 

On a tip-off, a team of Kotwali Police Station conducted a raid at the city's 
Babupara station and nabbed the BCL leader, Mohammad Shibli Kaiser, deputy 
commissioner (Crime) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, told reporters today. 
 
Al-Amin is the son of late Dulal Mia of Babupara station area. A sharp knife 
was recovered from his possession. 
 
He is also an accused in attempted murder of a BNP leader Mamun, who was 
injured in a shooting incident during the mass-uprising, Shibli Kaiser said. 
 
The arrested is known as a close associate of the General Secretary of 
Rangpur Metropolitan Jubo League, he said, adding, "He had attacked students 
with various firearms to suppress the student movement." 
 
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali told reporters that 
maximum efforts are being made to arrest the accused and criminals in the 
murder case. 
 
"The police have adopted a zero tolerance policy in this regard [the case]," 
he said.
 
Earlier, Shamsuzzaman Ahmed Bhutto, younger brother of former Social Welfare 
Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed, was arrested from Kaliganj Bazar in Lalmonirhat by 
the Lalmonirhat District Detective Branch (DB) police in the same case on 
October 27. 
 
Mahmudul Hasan Munna was killed in a clash during the anti-discrimination 
student movement on August 4, 2024 in Rangpur. 
 
Later on August 29, 2024, the deceased's father Abdul Majid, of Baruahat area 
of Kawnia upazila, filed a case in the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate 
Kotwali Cognizance Court accusing 128 people.
