KHULNA, Jan 30, 2025 (BSS) - Speakers at a symposium here unequivocally
called for immediate time-fitting measures to prevent the sea contamination
and pollution for the sake of freeing its aquatic resources from threatening
conditions.

The present world has been facing an important challenge related to the
gradually mounting pollution and contamination of the sea. So, there is no
way but to adopt a need-based measure to resolve the multilayer problem of
sea pollution on an urgent basis.

Academics, scientists and researchers came up with the observation while
addressing the inaugural session of a three-day international symposium
titled "Marine Litter and Coaster Ecosystem Nexus" at Khulna University (KU)
on Wednesday.

Fisheries and Marine Resource Technology (FMRT) Discipline of KU organized
the symposium at its Academic Building conference hall supported by German
Cooperation and German International Cooperation Society (GIZ).

KU Vice-chancellor Prof Rejaul Karim addressed the opening ceremony as the
chief guest, while FMRT Discipline Head Prof Golam Sarwar was in the chair.

Chief Adviser of Biodiversity Division of GIZ Bangladesh Dr Stefan Alfred
Groeneold, Director General of Department of Fisheries Dr Abdur Rouf and Dean
of KU Biology School Professor Golam Hossain also spoke on the occasion
disseminating their expertise.

In the three-day symposium, around 300 front-ranking researchers, policy-
makers, government officials, representatives of members of the civil society
and non-government development entities and other stakeholders are taking
part.

Some 53 research papers in nine technical sessions and 158 posters are
scheduled to be presented in the first two-day of the symposium.

Prof Rejaul Karim hoped that the symposium would play a pioneering role
towards knowledge sharing, dialogue and innovative solutions with the
distinguished participants like the Bughouse University in Germany.

He also said the symposium will also contribute a lot towards formulating a
roadmap related to protection of the estuarine ecosystem besides facing sea
pollution.
