Two held with 17.5 kgs of gold in Sylhet Airport

SYLHET, Feb 6, 2025 (BSS) - Members of Customs Intelligence and National Security Intelligence (NSI) arrested two people with 17.5 kilograms of gold at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet on Thursday morning.

The estimated market value of the seized gold is more than Taka 21 crore,
the customs department said.

The detainees are Syed Ahmed, 24, of Borolekha upazila in Moulvibazar district and Aftab Uddin, 36, aresident of Jaintiapur upazila of Sylhet district.

Assistant Commissioner of Customs, Excise, and VAT Bikash Chandra Debnath confirmed the matter to BSS saying, "Sayed and Aftab, passengers of the Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BG 252) flight from Sharjah, Dubai, which landed at the Osmani Airport at 8:30 am, was carrying the golds inside their luggages."

On a tip-off, a joint team of National Security Intelligence (NSI) and Customs Intelligence conducted a raid at the airport and recovered the gold that was hidden inside a portable fan, rechargeable light, and other materials of the two passengers' luggages.

The seized gold will be transferred to the government treasury, and a case will be filed with the Airport Police Station, officials confirmed.
