Awami Ulema League general secretary arrested in Ulipur

KURIGRAM, Feb 13, 2025 (BSS) – Police have arrested General Secretary of Upazila Awami Ulema League and Principal of Ulipur Bahumukhi Alim Madrasa Maulana Shafiqur Rahman for his alleged involvement in assaulting students during  the anti-discrimination movement in Ulipur, Kurigram.

Rahman, son of the late Abdus Sattar of Nefra area in Gunaigach union of Ulipur, was apprehended from the upazila gate this afternoon, according to police sources.

The incident took place on July 18, when students involved in the quota reform movement were attacked and beaten in the area of Ulipur Maharani Swarnamoyi School and College, as well as Masjidul Huda. Following the incident, student Mosabbir Hossain filed a case on November 21, 2024 accusing 44 individuals, along with 180 unidentified persons.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zillur Rahman of Ulipur Police Station confirmed that the arrest was made in relation to the assault on students during the anti-discrimination protests. 

The accused has been sent to jail after producing before the court.
