RANGPUR, Feb 21, 2025 (BSS) - Eminent journalist, Nazrul researcher and editor of the Daily Jugantor, poet Abdul Hye Sikder said no one has seen the scene of Shaheed Abu Sayeed holding bullets in his chest heroically in a thousand-year of Bengal's history.
“This spirit of the struggling student masses cannot be allowed to be destroyed in any way. All should work together to keep the students on the right path and decorate the country,” he said.
He said this while addressing a discussion organized at the Independence Memorial Square of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur (BRUR) this afternoon marking the ‘Shaheed Dibash and the International Mother Language Day 2025' as the chief guest.
Poet Abdul Hye Sikder said that much of the history of the language movement is still buried.
“Freedom of speech has returned after the July Revolution. Now all that suppressed history must be brought to the nation,” he said.
The BRUR authorities had taken up various colourful programmes to observe the day with due dignity.
As part of the programmes, Vice-chancellor of the university Professor Dr. Md. Showkat Ali inaugurated the condolence rally in the morning and paid deep tribute to the language martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Bengali language.
Teachers, students, officers and employees of various faculties, departments and offices participated in the condolence rally.
The condolence rally started from the south gate of the administrative building, went around the park intersection (Abu Sayeed Square), circled the main roads of the campus and ended at the Shaheed Minar Square.
Later, the Vice-chancellor placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar on the campus.
At this time, wreaths were placed there on behalf of the deans of different faculties and departments, residential halls, institutes and various social and cultural organizations.
In the afternoon, the discussion organized at the Independence Memorial Square was presided over by Vice-chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Showkat Ali.
Former Vice-chancellor of Patuakhali University of Science and Technology, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Latif Masum, was present as a special guest at the discussion.
Professor Masum said the new independence of ‘24 is showing a new dream to the entire nation.
“It is the duty of every citizen to take forward the dream of building a new Bangladesh,” he added.
In his closing speech, Vice-chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Showkat Ali said that the spirit and courage of the great language movement have provided strength and inspiration to the July Revolution of ‘24.
Earlier, in the first hour of the day, Vice-chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Showkat Ali paid tribute to the Shaheed Minar on behalf of the university administration.
With the sunrise, black badges were worn and the national flag was lowered to half-mast.
In addition, a milad and a dua mehfil were held at the university's central mosque after the Asr prayers seeking divine peace for the departed souls of the martyrs of the great language movement.
