TANGAIL, Feb 25, 2025(BSS) - Police have arrested two more suspects over robbery and harassment of women passengers on a Rajshahi-bound running bus from Dhaka on the Dhaka-Tangail highway.
The arrested dacoits were Md Alamgir Hossain, 34, and Md Rajib Hossain, 21. Police so far arrested five dacoits in this connection.
Tangail Police Super Mizanur Rahman at a press conference at his office today disclosed the information to journalists.
He said a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police on the basis of information given by the arrested dacoits, nabbed Alamgir from Sadhupara village under Purbadhala upazila of Netrakona district on Monday night. They also seized Taka 4,210 and recovered two silver rings from them.
During the interrogation, Alamgir Hossain told police that he kept the looted mobile sets, bungles and other ornaments of women passengers to his younger brother Rajib Hossain.
Police later, arrested Rajib Hossain from Polashbari area under Ashulia Thana and seized 10 mobile sets, ornaments and three bags from him. Police later, sent Alamgir and Rajib to the court seeking seven and five days remand.
The robbery took place in the early hours of February 17, when a group of armed robbers hijacked the Unique Road Royals bus around midnight. The bus, which had left Dhaka's Gabtoli at 11:30pm, was made hostage by the robbers at gunpoint, and several passengers were injured as the robbery unfolded.
The robbers moved the bus to various locations, looting and harassing two women during the three-hour ordeal. After stopping the bus at a secluded area of Mirzapur, the robbers left the vehicle. The driver initially refused to continue the journey. However, following pressure from the passengers, the driver resumed the trip.
The bus was later taken to Baraigram Police Station in Natore, where the driver, Babul Ali, 30, supervisor Suman Islam, 33 and helper Mahbub Alam, 28, were arrested on suspicion of their involvement in the robbery. They were later sent to court and released on bail.
Three days later, a passenger, Omar Ali from Natore, filed a case at Mirzapur Police Station naming eight to nine unidentified dacoits as the perpetrators.
