RANGPUR, March 25, 2025 (BSS) - Vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Professor Dr. Md. Showkat Ali today said there is no difference between the genocide of innocent unarmed Bengalis in 1971 and the killings of July-August 2024.
"It is necessary to ensure a fair trial of the 2024 genocide so that such barbaric killings do not happen in the future," he said while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion held at the Syndicate Room of the university's administrative building on Tuesday.
The BRUR authority organised the discussion in observance of the Genocide Day-2025.
Convener of the March 26 Independence Day and National Day 2025 Celebration Committee and Professor of the Department of Mathematics Dr. Md. Tajul Islam presided over the event.
At the time, the Vice-chancellor said that on this day in 1971, a terrible night descended on the life of the Bengali nation.
"At midnight on March 25, the barbaric Pakistani invading forces, armed with sophisticated weapons, carried out genocide across the country including Dhaka," he said.
Addressing the discussion as a special guest, freedom fighter Md. Ansar Ali highlighted various incidents of the brutal genocide by the Pakistani military forces in 1971.
Registrar of the university Dr. Md. Harun-or Rashid, Director of the Office of the Students' Affairs Professor Dr. Md. Ilias Pramanik, Head of the Department of Political Science Dr. Md. Tanjiul Islam, among others, spoke.
Deans of various faculties and heads of different departments, teachers and officials were present at the event.
