CHATTOGRAM , March 28, 2025 ( BSS) - Chattogram Metropolitan and District police have taken up three-tier security arrangement with the engagements of regular police personnel, eagle force and citizen representatives to maintain law and order as well as to prevent criminal incidents during marathon Eid holidays.
As the thousands of city dwellers already started leaving the metropolis for ancestral home to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with their near and dear ones, law enforcement agencies have chalked up elaborate security measures keeping in mind the re-emerge of criminal gangs by taking advantage of thin population and traffic.
Besides, Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has also issued 13-point directives for people ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr holidays seeking cooperation from all city dwellers. CMP advised the city people to remain vigil with entity-wise and carried out locality base awareness programme to avert and foil any untoward incidents.
The 13-point mass-notifications, include to use extra improved quality digital security systems and lock at doors of business organizations and not to keep cash money or precious ornaments in vacant residences during their absence, inform instantly to the nearest police station while noticing suspected roaming of unknown persons in any locality, to call 999 or CMP control room urgently during any criminal incidents, bank and financial institutions have been asked to install and engage sufficient and secured safety equipment with extra manpower under an officer.
CMP Commissioner Hasib Aziz told BSS today that a heightened security plan has been chalked out to keep watch on the every knock and corner of the city during Eid vacation by keeping all police personnel on-duty along with bigger engagements of citizens, particularly community representatives, to ensure safety and security.
“Besides, the law enforcement agencies, every citizens have also own responsibility to ensure personal safety and security as well as their neighbours. That’s why we have involved the citizens in our plan so that police could intervene and rush the sport quickly” CMP Commissioner said.
CMP sources said they also put extra efforts to prevent and foil any subversive or act of sabotage by banned Chhatra League, Hijbut Tahrir activists and any suspicious attempt by organized criminal gangs.
CMP commissioner said Officers-in-Charge of 16 police stations under CMP have not been given leave during this year’s marathon Eid vacation considering the sensitivity of the current overall situation and public safety.
He said even mid and senior level officials of the CMP have been asked to monitor and watch closely the situation by ensuring their presence in the field. The Eagle Party members which were engaged at markets and shopping malls during Ramadan will also on-duty at localities and roads during the vacation.
CMP officials said they are optimistic of having a satisfactory and peaceful Eid vacation like almost peaceful Ramadan situation, because, apart from police , joint forces are also in field which will have a significant effect in maintaining law and order.
On the other hand, district police also have taken up elaborate security measures to keep up good law and order situation so that home bound travellers gripped with festival-mood can reach their destination with safety and security as well as to pass the vacation peacefully during their stay in the village home.
Talking to BSS, Additional District Superintendent of Police Mohammad Russel said they have divided 17 thanas under the district into 7 sectors based on proximity of each other and all circle officers have been directed to remain in filed along with lower-tier police personnel to maintain peace and stability during the Eid holidays.
“Over 700-750 police personnel will be on duty during Eid holidays. We will put special efforts to prevent highway robbery and snatching to ensure peaceful journey of home bound people for their Eid celebration,” he said.
Due to extra efforts, police have foiled a numbers of dacoit attempts at Misharai and Sitakunda upazilas on Dhaka-Ctg highways in the district in the last two days and arrested members of highway robber-gangs because of tightened patrol on highways.
Police will also work for maintaining on-rush of traffic at city entry and departure points like Alonkar, A K Khan Gate , Oxygen Crossing and Shah Amanat Bridge to ease the vehicle pressure that regularly causes traffic gridlock for hours and increases the sufferings of home-bound passengers.
He said special vigilance team will also be engaged at crime-prone Patiya-to-Lohagara section on Ctg-Cox’s Bazar highways to avert possible highway robbery.
