BAGERHAT, April 9, 2025 (BSS) – A case has been filed at the Speedy Trial Tribunal, naming 67 people, including former Awami League (AL) MP Sheikh Tanmoy, top police officials, lawyers, businessmen, leaders of various levels of Awami League and its affiliates members.
The case was filed in connection with the attack on a student movement march against discrimination in Bagerhat.
On Monday (April 8) afternoon, a person named Miraj Sheikh, a resident of Gopalkathi village in Gotapara union of Bagerhat Sadar upazila, filed the case in the court.
Senior Judge of the Bagerhat Judicial Court, Azmira Ferdousi, has taken cognizance of the case and directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the incident and submit a report within the next seven working days.
The case states that when the student movement against discrimination against the fascist Awami League government started on the morning of August 4 last year.
The protesters reached the Bagerhat court premises with a peaceful procession, and the police dispersed them by firing tear gas, throwing bombs, lathi-charge and firing bullets.
During this time, the police and Awami League terrorists attacked the protesters with ramda, chapati, iron rods and snatched cash and mobile phones from them. Many of the protesters were injured in the attack.
The complaint in the case states that the protestor did not dare to file a case in the court or police station due to fear for his life.
Among the accused in the case are former MP Sheikh Tanmoy of Bagerhat-2 constituency, former MP Mir Shawkat Ali Badsha, then Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) of Bagerhat with the rank of Superintendent of Police Md. Asaduzzaman, another Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Masud Rana, District Detective Police OC (DB) Md. Mamunur Rashid, OC of Bagerhat Sadar Model Police Station Md. Saidur Rahman, Police Inspector (DI-1) of the Superintendent of Police's Office Syed Babul Akhter, District Awami League General Secretary Bhuiyan Hemayet Uddin, Joint General Secretary Khan Habibur Rahman, former Mayor of Bagerhat Municipality, District Jubo League President Sardar Nasir Uddin, District Sramik League General Secretary Khan Abu Bakkar, District Jubo Mohila League President Luna Siddique, District Awami League Organizing Secretary Mir Fazle Sayeed Dablu, District Chhatra League General Secretary Sardar Nahian Al Sultan Oshan, Businessman Tapas Kumar Saha. The list of accused includes the names of lawyers, police members and leaders of various levels of Awami League and its affiliated organizations.
Citing the case documents, the state's lawyer, Bagerhat District Judge's Court Public Prosecutor (PP) SM Mahabub Morshed Lalon, said that a coordinator of the persecuted anti-discrimination student movement filed the case in the speedy trial tribunal.
The names of 67 people, including former MPs and police officers, have been mentioned in the case.
The judge accepted the case and ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the incident and submit a report within the next seven working days.
