LALMONIRHAT, April 10, 2025 (BSS) - A sudden Nor'wester [Kalbaisakhi storm]
in Patgram upazila of the district has caused extensive damage to crops,
houses and shops this morning.
Trees and electric poles were uprooted, cutting off power supply and several
houses were damaged by rain and strong winds as the nor'wester lashed the
upazila.
On the other hand, corn and vegetable fields were damaged extensively. Shops
and houses collapsed in the College More area of Patgram municipal town in
the early hours of Thursday.
More than a hundred houses, including mud houses and shops, were damaged in
the upazila due to the storm.
Akabbar Ali, a farmer affected by the storm in the College More area under
Patgram Municipality, said, "This morning, my house suddenly fell down. I
don't know how I survived with my family. I am a daily wage worker and my
house collapsed. I am in despair."
Saddam, Russell and Rabiul from Patgram College More area said, "The tin and
fence of about 12 to 13 of our shops were blown away by the storm. We have
suffered a lot."
Patgram Upazila Project Implementation Officer Ataur Rahman said, "We have
visited the affected areas. A list of the affected people is being taken from
the union chairmen."
Patgram Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Zillur Rahman said, "A list of the
affected is being made. An application will be made to the Deputy
Commissioner for allocation for the affected people."
Saikhul Arifin, deputy director of Lalmonirhat Department of Agricultural
Extension (DAE), said the Nor'wester has damaged the corn fields and the
upazila agricultural officers have been instructed to find out the extent of
the damages.
