KHULNA, April 18, 2025 (BSS) - Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) arrested four persons from the Sonadanga area in the city on charges of collecting extortion in the guise of personnel of the Detective Branch of Police.
The arrested are Masud Rana, 23, son of Abdul Hamid Sarder; Foysal Mahmud, 24, son of Abdus Samad Gain, resident of Khalisabunia under Shymnagar upazila in Satkhira; Salah Uddin, son of Kamrul Islam, resident of Gabura village under Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira; and Rifat Parvez Rafi, son of Yousuf Ali, resident of Amtola area under Khulna Sadar thana in the city.
On information, a police team conducted a drive in the Andirghat Road area under Sonadanga police station in the city on Thursday around 9 pm and arrested four alleged extortionists from the residence of Ikhtiar Uddin Sumon Dhali, said Md Ahsan Habib, additional police commissioner of KMP (in-charge-media) today.
Sumon Dhali said four youths identifying themselves as members of the Detective Branch (DB) entered his residence last night and demanded Tk 2 lakh, accusing him of being an online gambler.
As Sumon denied providing the money, they took away two pairs of gold earrings, a gold ring, a laptop and three mobile phones, threatening him with dire consequences.
Hearing Sumon's hue and cry, his neighbours rushed to the spot and confined them. After that, they dialled 999 seeking help from the police.
Then, police and army personnel rushed to the spot and arrested the alleged four extortionists.
A case was filed with Sonadanga police station in this connection.
