RANGPUR, April 28, 2025 (BSS) - Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Professor Dr Md. Showkat Ali said intellectual property is a powerful tool in today's knowledge-driven economy.
"Intellectual property - including creations like inventions, designs, and trademarks - is essential for academic research in fields such as medicine, agricultural innovation, educational equipment, digital technology," he said.
The Vice-Chancellor said this while addressing a seminar as the chief guest held at the university's virtual classroom of Academic Building-2 on Sunday afternoon.
The Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the university organised the seminar in observance of World Intellectual Property Day 2025.
IQAC Director Professor Dr Md. Tajul Islam presided over the programme, while Dean of the Faculty of Life and Earth Sciences of BRUR Professor Dr Md. Emdadul Haque and Registrar Dr Md. Harun-or Rashid spoke as special guests.
Teachers and students from various departments participated in the seminar.
Pabna University of Science and Technology Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md. Nazrul Islam presented a paper on intellectual property as the keynote speaker.
The Vice-Chancellor said intellectual property is a bridge between theory and reality.
"Besides protecting our own intellectual property, we should work to build a world where creativity grows in a responsible, fair, and sustainable way," he said.
He also put emphasis on encouraging innovation to ensure fair access and ensure the protection of the creation of young and women innovators and marginalized communities.
"However, we must be aware that the intellectual property framework should never become an obstacle, rather it should open the way for innovation," Professor Md. Showkat Ali added.
Earlier, a rally, led by the Vice-Chancellor, was held with the participation of teachers and students from 22 departments of the university. The rally circled the main road of the university and its adjacent areas and concluded on the campus.
