RAJSHAHI, April 28, 2025 (BSS)- Rajshahi Water Supply and Sewerage Authority 
(RWASA) has taken an initiative to bring hundred percent people of Rajshahi 
city and its adjacent municipalities under the supply of drinkable water by 
the end of 2027.

Implementation works of the water treatment project is expected to end within 
the stipulated time with the main thrust of ensuring water quality and 
meeting the water deficit.

Upon successful implementation of the project titled "Rajshahi WASA Surface 
Water Treatment Plant", 20 crore liters of purified water will be supplied to 
the targeted beneficiaries every day.

Under the Taka 4,062-crore project, water from the Padma River will be 
supplied to households for drinking purposes after necessary treatment.

Around 20 percent works of the water treatment project being implemented with 
financial support of Chinese Hunan Construction Engineering Company Limited 
were completed.

Construction works at the project area were formally inaugurated today 
(Monday).

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen attended the inaugural ceremony 
saying the project will ensure drinkable water to Rajshahi people side by 
side with improving their socio-economic condition.

He said Bangladesh and China are working together and expected that relations 
between the two countries will further be bolstered in future.

RWASA Managing Director Rezaul Alam Sarker, Chief Engineer Parvez Mamud, 
Deputy Secretary of the government's Economic Relation Division Abdul Kader, 
Commercial Manager of the project Jo Huyaen and Chief Project Adviser Shu Jo 
were present on the occasion.

Talking to BSS on the issue, Rezaul Alam Sarker said all old pipelines and 
hydrants of the city will also be repaired and renovated under the project. 

The drinkable water will be supplied to the people of Rajshahi city and its 
surrounding Naohata and Katakhali pourasabha.
 
He said the treatment plant is being installed at Sarangpur area adjacent to 
the Padma River under Godagari upazila about 26 kilometers off the Rajshahi 
city to clean and purify the river water.

Under the project, 53-kilometer main pipelines, 48-kilometer primary and 
secondary distribution pipelines, conventional water treatment plant, treated 
water transmission main and booster pump stations and an intake will be 
constructed.
 
RWASA Chief Engineer Mamud said daily water demand in the city is around 130 
MLD at present and 98.037 MLD waters are being extracted from underground 
through pumps while nine MLD from surface water, totalling 107.04 MLD water 
to meet the demands.
 
He said they are supplying 10.70 crore liters of water daily to over 6.44 
lakh people through 110 production pumps and 859-kilometer pipeline network.
