GAIBANDHA, April 29, 2025 (BSS) - A total of 713 students of five schools
located at disaster-prone areas under Sundarganj upazila of the district got
disaster tolerant materials from a local NGO here on Monday.
In this regard, a simple function was also held on the premises of Belka MC
High School under Belka union this morning at the initiative of SKS
Foundation under School Led Community Resilience Disaster and Climate Risks
(SLCR DCR) Project funded by Muslim Aid UK Bangladesh Country office.
On behalf of Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Raz Kumar Biswas, Assistant
Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md. Masudur Rahman addressed the
function as the chief guest with Head Teacher of Belka MC High School Ahsan
Habib Khokon in the chair.
Upazila Secondary Education Officer Md. Jahedul Islam spoke at the ceremony
as special guest while Social workers Professor Mazedul Islam, Mahmudul Islam
Pramanik and Project Manager Afroza Bulbul attended the function, among
others.
The chief guest thanked SKS Foundation for providing such materials to the
students in a bid to run their studies smoothly during the emergencies
including flood and heavy rainfall.
Project Manager Afroza Bulbul said a number of academic institutions are
located in disaster-prone six unions-- Tarapur, Belka, Horipur, Chandipur,
Sreepur and Kapasia-- under Sundarganj upazila in the district. Of them, five
schools of the unions have been brought under the project.
As one mighty river Teesta blows through the unions, the schools remain
closed during the flood that is why academic activities of the students are
hampered seriously.
To turn the schools into disaster resilient ones in order to run the academic
activities acceptable and continued during the emergency caused by flood and
heavy rainfall, SKS Foundation is doing renovation works at the schools of
the unions under the project funded by Muslim Aid Bangladesh Country office,
she added.
Accordingly, disaster tolerant materials like umbrellas and rain proof bags
were distributed to the 713 students of the five schools, the Project Manager
concluded.
