Narail free day tomorrow

   NARAIL, Dec 9, 2021 (BSS) - Narail free day is tomorrow as on the day of
1971, the then sub-division under Jashore district was freed from the
clutches of Pakistan occupation forces and freedom fighters hoisted the flag
of independent Bangladesh in the town.

   To observe the day, district administration and sadar upazila unit of
Muktijoddha Sangsad have taken up an elaborate programmes including hoisting
national and organisational flags in the morning at its offices in the
district, placing wreaths at Baddhovumi (killing ground) near judge court,
mass graveyard on water development board office premises and the martyrs
memorial, holding colourful rally in the town and discussion.

   District administration, Awami League and different socio-cultural
organisations have also drawn up various programmes to mark the day.

   On 8 December morning, 1971, the freedom fighters attacked Pakistan army
at Lohagora Thana and they took control the area. Kalia was freed on 9
December.

   On December 9 and 10, 1971, a group of freedom fighters led by Sharif
Humayun Kabir and Fazlur Rahman Zinnah took position inside the Narail Water
Development Board (WDB) and started firing targeting the Pakistan military
forces came there.

   In retaliation, the Pakistani forces accompanied by local collaborators
started firing back indiscriminately targeting the freedom fighters.

   A total of 40 Pakistani soldiers were captured by freedom fighters during
the fighting.

  Hearing the news of falling down of Pakistan occupation forces to freedom
fighters in Lohagora and Kalia thanas, people from nearby villages encircled
the town and attacked Pak army camp at water development board and took
control the camp led by freedom fighters.

   From the very beginning of the liberation war, the Pakistan army set up a
camp in Dak Banglo and Water Development Board premises in Rupganj area in
the town with the cooperation of local collaborators including Razakers and
resorted to genocide in the district.

  During the liberation war, the Pakistani forces and their local accomplices
butchered a large number of innocent people and violated several hundreds of
women in the district.
