MYMENSINGH, Dec 9, 2021 (BSS) - Mymensingh Free Day will be observed here
tomorrow in a befitting manner.
On this day in 1971, the valiant freedom fighters liberated Mymensingh
by defeating Pakistani occupation forces.
To observe the day, the district administration and Muktijoddha Sangsad
Sangsad jointly have chalked out a week-long programme. The programme
includes Bejoy Rally which will start from Chota Bazar Mukto Moncha tomorrow
at 10 am, a documentary film will be screened on Liberation War, discussion
and cultural function. Besides, upazilas of the district will celebrate the
day following different programmes.
In 1971 on this day, the freedom fighters led by Principal Motiur Rahman,
ex religious affairs minister and ex-president of the district unit of Awami
League and Indian allied forces marched towards the Mymensingh town with
chanting Joybangla slogan and reached at Circuit house ground and freed
Mymensingh through hoisting red green flag of independent of Bangladesh.
Pak occupation forces fled to Dhaka through the district of Tangail at
midnight on December 9 in 1971.
On April 17 in 1971, a fierce battle took place between the Pakistani
army and the freedom fighters at Kalihati in Tangail on April 17 and it
continued for five days. It was the first fierce battle in this region during
the 1971 Liberation War.
The Pakistani troops managed to enter Mymensingh town on April 22. The
freedom fighters built their stronghold in the Haluaghat upazila of the
district. Several battles took place in the border area during the nine-month
long bloody war.
On December 7, the freedom fighters freed Haluaghat from the occupation
forces and on December 8, Phulpur, Bhaluka, Phulbaria and Gouripur upazilas
and on December 10 the freedom fighters freed Muktagachha upazila from the
clutches of the occupation forces.
