Police arrest one accused in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Aug 21, 2026 (BSS)- Rajpara Thana Police have arrested the prime accused within one hour of receiving a complaint over an incident where a security guard on duty in the Laxmipur Mor area of Rajshahi city was assaulted and threatened with murder at knifepoint.
 
The arrested accused is Ariful Islam Arif, 37. He is allegedly known in Rajshahi city as a patient broker and tout.
 
The victim, Sabbir Hossain, 26, works as a security guard at the old building of Popular Diagnostic Center at Laxmipur More.

On August 19, 2026, at around 12:30 PM, while on duty, the security guard was making an announcement via hand-mike to make service-seekers aware of patient brokers, thieves, pickpockets, and fraudsters, as per the rules of the institution.
 
At that time, several people including Ariful Islam Arif, known as a patient broker, came there and forbade him from broadcasting the awareness message on the mike.

When Sabbir Hossain said he was performing his duty as per the institution's rules, the accused indiscriminately beat him up, causing swelling and injuries to various parts of his body, and abused him in obscene language.
 
At one point, at the instigation of others, accused Ariful Islam Arif ran behind the old building of Popular Diagnostic Center and brought a sharp local weapon.

Later, he held the weapon to the victim's throat to intimidate him with the intent to kill and threatened to take his life.
 
After a video of the incident spread on social media, the matter came to the attention of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Faizul Kabir.

He instructed the concerned police officers to quickly arrest those involved in the incident.
 
Following the Police Commissioner's instructions, Rajpara Thana police conducted an operation in the shortest possible time and were able to arrest the accused Ariful Islam Arif within just one hour of receiving the complaint.
 
In this incident, the victim, after discussing with his higher authorities at his workplace, filed a case at Rajpara Thana on Thursday.
 
Along with recovering the local weapon in the possession of the arrested accused, Rajpara Thana police operations are continuing to arrest other accused involved in the incident.
