GAZIPUR, Sept 12, 2026 (BSS) - A large-scale cleanliness campaign has began here today as part of the efforts to prevent dengue and keep the environment clean.

The campaign was jointly organized by the district administration and Gazipur City Corporation and carried out in areas including Shmashan Mandir, Shmashan Mor, Raj Shmashan embankment and the bank of Chela Beel.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman formally inaugurated the nationwide cleanliness programme through a videoconference from the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad complex in the capital. 

In his inaugural address, he said people must play a vital role alongside the government in keeping the country clean and livable.

As part of the programme, around 600 to 700 people from different sections of society including government officials and employees, teachers and students, scouts and members of the Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC), took part in the cleanliness drive here.

Working alongside local sanitation workers, the participants removed garbage and waste that had accumulated for a long time along the Raj Shmashan embankment and the bank of Chela Beel. 

They also took measures to destroy breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes and raise public awareness about dengue prevention.

Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Md Nurul Karim Bhuiyan told BSS that all accumulated waste across the district would be cleared within the next three months.

He warned that authorities of government offices, educational institutions and other establishments would be held accountable if cleanliness was not properly maintained on their premises.

Gazipur City Corporation Administrator Md Shawkat Hossain Sarker also joined the campaign with city corporation officials and employees.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Israel Hawladar, Deputy Director of the Local Government Division Ahmad Hossain Bhuiyan and officials from various levels of the district and city administration were also present.

Meanwhile, local residents welcomed the large-scale cleanliness campaign, describing it as a positive initiative. They stressed that individual awareness and responsibility, alongside government efforts, were essential to build a clean and livable Gazipur.
