Call to stand beside obstetrics fistula patients for rehabilitation

RAJSHAHI, March 31, 2022 (BSS) - Standing beside the patients suffering from
obstetric fistula with helping hands can be the best way of their treatment
and rehabilitation timely.

Emphasis should be given on reaching the messages to all the patients that
there are remedial scopes from the disease through institutional treatment at
different places in the country.

All the government and non-government entities concerned should come forward
and work together so that the target group of women can go back to their
normal life after deriving total benefits of the existing facilities.

Medical practitioners and development activists came up with the observation
while addressing an upazila-based networking meeting at Charghat Upazila
Health Complex in the district on Wednesday.

LAMB Hospital organized the meeting with assistance from the Department of
Health Services and financial support from the UNFPA Bangladesh.

Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer AshiqurRahman, Medical Officers Dr
Sanjida Yeasmin, Dr Farjana Yeasmin and Dr Maisa Farzana and LAMB Hospital
Representative Ruhul Amin Mridha addressed the meeting as resource persons
disseminating their expertise on the issue.

The meeting was told that need-based programmes including case Identification
from the community, referral for diagnosis, timely management, motivation,
counseling, follow up and comprehensive rehabilitation and reintegration are
being implemented to free the society from obstetric fistula by 2030.

Ruhul Amin said there are advantages of treatment and rehabilitation for the
obstetric patients in the LAMB Hospital, while he was presenting a concept
paper on "End Obstetric Fistula in Rangpur and Rajshahi Division:
Achievements and Challenges".

Different types of rehabilitation works are being conducted on behalf of a
project titled "Elimination of Genital Fistula by Capturing, Treating,
Rehabilitating and Reintegrating in Bangladesh (FRRei)" to mitigate the
health related problem.

The FRRei project is being implemented in different districts, including
Rajshahi, Bogura and Sirajganj, of the region with the main thrust of
reducing the prevalence of fistula.

All the line departments, including health, family planning, women affairs
and social development, are being sensitized to detect the fistula patients
for their proper rehabilitation.

Ruhul Mridha urged the participating health officials and others concerned to
extend their cooperation so that the patients can be brought under the
privileges of treatment and rehabilitation for ensuring their normal life.

Various issues, including ways and means on how to attain the desired yield
in the field of eradicating obstetric fistula within the stipulated time,
were discussed in the meeting elaborately.
