KHULNA, Oct 17, 2022 (BSS) - Awami League (AL) backed candidate Sheikh Harun-ur-Rashid was unofficially elected chairman in Khulna Zila Parishad polls today.

Harun, also president of Khulna district unit AL, has obtained 536 votes
while his nearest rival independent candidate SM Mortoza Rashidi Dara secured 403 votes.

Besides, another independent candidate Dr Sheikh Baharul Alam has bagged 37 votes.

Returning Officer, who is also deputy commissioner of Khulna, Md Moniruzzaman
Talukder, announced the results at his office this afternoon.

Earlier, the election was held at 10 centres in nine upazila headquarters and
one in the city's Government Zila School from 9 am to 2pm peacefully amid
tight security.

A total of 977 votes have been cast through EVM out of 978 votes.

A total of 41 candidates were vying for the 12 member posts. Of them, 28
candidates were in the race for the 9 general member posts while 13 women candidates for the three women reserved seats.
