GAIBANDHA, Oct 18, 2022 (BSS) - Sheikh Russel Day was observed in the district today in a befitting manner coinciding with the 59th birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's youngest son Shaheed Sheikh Russel.
Marking the day, Gaibandha district administration and Bangladesh Shishu Academy here have jointly chalked out the elaborate programmes.
The programmes include placing floral wreaths at the portrait of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, offering prayers and munajat, holding doa mahfil, serving improved diets to the inmates of orphanages, art and essay writing competitions to the students, prize distribution to the winners.
The programmes also included screening the programmes undertaken by the government in Dhaka through multimedia projector, tree plantation and serving improved diets to the inmates of Shishu paribars.
Apart from it, a big rally was brought out in the district town in the morning.
Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad and local lawmaker Mahabub Ara Begum Gini inaugurated the rally with the participation of officials, politicians, students, teachers, professionals, sociocultural activists, civil society members and common people.
Then a discussion meeting was also held at the auditorium of Zila Shilpakala Academy with deputy commissioner (DC) M. Oliur Rahman in the chair.
Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad Mahabub Ara Begum Gini attended the function as the chief guest.
The function was also addressed, among others, by police super Muhammad Towhidul Islam, ADC-General Sushanta Kumar Mahato, Sadar upazila chairman Shah Sarwar Kabir, Gaibandha Poura Mayor Matlubour Rahman and Freedom Fighter Mahmudul Haquque Shahjada.
Today is the 59th birthday of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which is being observed as Sheikh Russel Day across the country.
