NEW DELHI, Nov, 20, 2023 (Xinhua) - Australia clinched the cricket World Cup 2023 on Sunday by defeating India by 6 wickets in the final match, consisting of 50 overs each side, staged in Ahmedabad, India.
This victory marked the sixth time the Australians have won the world's biggest cricket tournament.
Nearly 150,000 people attended the match at the Narendra Modi Stadium, with Indian Prime Minister Modi also in attendance among the spectators.
This conclusion brought the 46-day long world cricket tournament to an end; today's match was the 48th of the tournament.
Batting first, India scored 240 runs in the stipulated 50 overs, setting a target of 241 runs for the Aussies. Indian opener Shubman Gill was the first to be dismissed, scoring just 4 runs. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma provided a strong start scoring 47 runs off 31 balls, before being caught brilliantly by Travis Head.
ODI's joint highest century-maker and former Indian captain Virat Kohli stepped up, scoring his fifth consecutive half-century. Wicket-keeper batsman K.L. Rahul also contributed 66 runs but faced criticism for his slow pace, facing 107 deliveries.
Australia faced an early setback, losing three wickets and finding themselves at 47 runs for three wickets in 8 overs. However, batters Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne steadied the innings, ultimately guiding their team to lift the World Cup, by scoring 137 and 58, respectively.
India had been on a winning streak in the tournament, securing victories in all round-robin league matches against nine teams: Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, and South Africa.
In the semifinals earlier this week, India overcame New Zealand, while Australia defeated South Africa to set up the final clash with the hosts.
