Georgia adopts 'foreign influence' law despite protests

TBILISI, May 14, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Georgia's parliament on Tuesday adopted a controversial "foreign influence" law that has sparked weeks of mass protests against the measure, denounced as mirroring Russian legislation used to silence dissent.

Lawmakers voted 84 to 30 to pass the law in its third and final reading, a live broadcast of the parliamentary session showed, despite ongoing street protests outside the building and warnings from Brussels that the move would undermine Tbilisi's longstanding European aspirations.
