BERLIN, Oct 26, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday
warned Iran against any "escalation" after Israel struck Iranian military
targets overnight.
Israel said its strikes were in retaliation to an Iranian missile attack
earlier this month.
"My message to Iran is clear: massive escalating reactions must not continue.
These must stop immediately. Only then can we open the possibility of a
peaceful evolution in the Middle East," he posted on X.
Scholz called for ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon, and for the release of all
hostages held by Hamas.
In Lebanon, he called for the implementation of UN resolution 1701, which
followed a previous war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006 and stipulates
that both Hezbollah and Israel keep their armed forces out of southern
Lebanon.
"We expect Hezbollah to withdraw beyond the Litani River, to allow for a
peaceful evolution," the German Chancellor said.
