SANGSAD BHABAN, Aug 27, 2026 (BSS)- Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, has described the election of the President as an important new chapter in Bangladesh’s constitutional continuity and institutional stability.

“The presidential election in 2026, after a 35-year gap since 1991, is a significant event in the country’s democratic journey,” he said in his opening address on the first day of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad today.
Referring to the country’s Liberation War, Hafiz Uddin said Bangladesh emerged as an independent and sovereign state through the great Liberation War of 1971.

“The sacrifices made during the Liberation War continue to inspire us in establishing democracy, justice, human dignity and people’s rights,” he said, adding that August, which carries the memories of the victory of the freedom-seeking students and people, holds special significance in the national life.

The Speaker said the student-people’s mass uprising in August 2024 brought an end to the long-standing autocratic and fascist rule.

Paying deep tribute to all martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War and the July mass uprising, he said everyone must play a responsible role in building a democratic, just and humane state to honour their sacrifice.

Highlighting the state and constitutional significance of the third session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, Hafiz Uddin said the assumption of office by a new President in the country’s highest constitutional post has ushered in an important chapter in constitutional continuity and institutional stability.

He congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as President on behalf of the Jatiya Sangsad and in his personal capacity, wishing him good health, long life and success.

The Speaker expressed hope that under the President’s leadership, the dignity of the constitutional institutions of the state and mutual cooperation among them would be further strengthened, while the country’s democratic journey would gain fresh momentum.

Describing the Jatiya Sangsad as the highest democratic forum to fulfill the hopes, aspirations and expectations of the people, he said ensuring accountability in legislation, policymaking and state activities as well as giving the highest priority to public welfare are primary responsibility of the lawmakers.

“We have to build a Bangladesh where democracy is consolidated, rule of law is established, state institutions are effective, and every citizen can live with equal opportunities and dignity,” he said.

Calling for united efforts to achieve this goal while upholding the aspirations of July, Hafiz Uddin said national interests must be given the highest priority above party and political differences.

He expressed his commitment to conduct parliamentary proceedings in an atmosphere of tolerance, mutual respect and cordiality.

The Speaker hoped that through collective efforts, the third session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad would become vibrant and effective.
