SIRAJGANJ, Aug 19, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced three people to life -term imprisonment for their involvement in buying and selling drugs and supplying narcotics to different parts of the country.
District and Sessions Judge Md Iqbal Hossain handed down the verdict at noon. The court also fined each convict Taka 20,000 and sentenced them to three months of simple imprisonment in default of payment.
The convicts are - Sejbul Islam, son of Jeneral Islam of Chandalia Kumarpur village, Sohel Rana, son of Alauddin of Raninagar village and Ariful Islam Sagar, son of Yachin Ali of Bidirpur village under Godagari upazila of Rajshahi.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Rafique Sarkar confirmed the verdict, saying Ariful Islam was present in court when the judgment was delivered, while the other two convicts remain absconding.
According to the prosecution, the convicts were involved in buying and selling drugs and supplied narcotics to different parts of the country.
On October 4, 2021, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-12 received information that a group of people were transporting heroin from Rajshahi to Dhaka by truck. Acting on a tip-off, RAB set up a checkpoint at Mahishluti Bazar on the Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway in Tarash upazila and began searching vehicles.
RAB members intercepted the vehicle and recovered 250 grams of heroin during a subsequent search. The three accused were arrested from the truck.
RAB Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) Solaiman Hossain later filed a case with Tarash Police Station.
Following the completion of the trial and examination of evidence and witnesses, the court today convicted and sentenced all three.
