18.46 lakh people receive legal aid at government expense

DHAKA, Sept 12, 2026 (BSS) - A total of 18,46,799 people have received legal advice and assistance at government expense through the National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) so far.

According to a report published on the website of the NLASO, the figure covered legal aid services provided from 2009 up to August 2026.

Of the beneficiaries, 31,222 received services through the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office while 13,33,777 were assisted through legal aid offices in 64 districts.

Another 30,514 people received assistance through the Labour Legal Aid Cells in Dhaka and Chattogram. Meanwhile, 2,14,471 people received legal advice through the government legal aid national helpline call centre, available toll-free at 16699.

A total of 380 people received legal advice through the online platform, including Facebook and Messenger.

In addition, 236,435 people were reached through public awareness programmes.

Altogether, the number of beneficiaries of legal aid services has reached 18,46,799.

The services are being provided at government expense under the Legal Aid Services Act to assist financially disadvantaged and insolvent litigants who are unable to afford legal representation.

The NLASO operates under the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
