DHAKA, Jan 8, 2023 (BSS) - Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said people who believed in the spirit of liberation war should come forward forgetting their conceit towards resisting communalism and militancy.
He made the remarks while speaking at the triennial council of Jatiya Party (JP) at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium here this afternoon.
Addressing as the chief guest, Quader said the spirit of Bangladesh's liberation war must be protected aiming to save Bangladesh.
"If we want to save Bangladesh, we must save the democracy of Bangladesh. All must be united against communalism and militancy. To consolidate the victory, the spirit of the liberation war must be protected," he added.
Claiming that there is no alternative to keeping Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in power, the AL general secretary said politics should be made attractive to the good and talented people otherwise politics will go under the control of bad people and the country will remain in bad condition.
Time and again the wall of mistrust was built in political relations after 1975, he said no bridge was built among the political parties.
A strong opposition party is needed to strengthen democracy but some parties have surrendered time and again to a corrupt political party of the country, he said, adding "Bad politics produces bad politicians."
Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said bad politicians keep bad politics alive and that is exactly happening in Bangladesh.
If the politics of the country goes in the hands of bad people, the condition of the state will be worse, he said.
Honest and brilliant people should be brought to politics otherwise politics will become meritless, he said, adding that people with good character should do politics otherwise the politics will become characterless.
Quader said that no one could become the AL general secretary three times in a row after the independence.
He also expressed his gratitude to AL President Sheikh Hasina for giving him the responsibility of Awami League general secretary for the third time.
Chaired by JP President Anwar Hossain Manju, coordinator of the central 14-party alliance and Awami League Advisory Council Member Amir Hossain Amu, Krishak Sramik Janata League President Bangabir Kader Siddique, Workers Party of Bangladesh President Rashed Khan Menon, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASOD) President Hasanul Haq Inu, Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal General Secretary Dilip Barua, JP General Secretary Sheikh Shahidul Islam and Ganatantri Party General Secretary Dr Shahadat Hossain also spoke at the council, among others.
About formation of an alliance, led by Dr Kamal Hossain, before 11th Jatiya Sangsad elections, Kader Siddique said, "Forming the alliance under the leadership of Dr Kamal Hossain was the biggest mistake of my life."
He said the spirit of the liberation war should remain upheld as long as Bangladesh exists.
Speaking at the function, Menon said BNP has started a tug-of-war over the country's Constitution.
"BNP wants to take the country backward for ill purposes," he said urging the BNP leaders to pay attention to repair their own party.
