DHAKA, March 4, 2023 (BSS) - Dhaka University former Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique today called upon the journalists of new generation to follow the life and works of late journalist Shah Alamgir who served as director general of Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB).
"Shah Alamgir was an undisputed leader in movements to realize the rights of journalist community. He acted as like as an ombudsman in journalist community," he said.
Prof Arefin, also chairman of the board of directors of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), was addressing as the chief guest the 'Shah Alamgir Journalism Excellence Award' giving ceremony arranged by Broadcast Journalist Centre (BJC) at Jatiya Press Club auditorium.
He said the country's journalist community has advanced a lot with their efficiency and of them Shah Alamgir was an exemplary personality.
"Shah Alamgir was an honest person and devoted journalist. I had scopes to work with him in different times. I saw how much honest and devoted person to work he was," Prof Arefin said.
BJC Chairman Rezwanul Haque Raja chaired the function which was moderated by its Trustee Rashed Ahmed.
Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) former President Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) President Sohel Haider Chowdhury, Dainik Prothom Alo Joint Editor Sohrab Hassan, BJC Member Secretary Shakil Ahmed and Shah Alamgir's family members were present, among others.
The speakers said Shah Alamgir did journalism selflessly imbued with the spirit of Liberation War and non-communalism.
Shah Alamgir always suggested journalists to stay honest and bold in maintaining professionalism, they recalled.
BJC introduced the 'Shah Alamgir Excellence Award' for the first time this year in honor of Shah Alamgir who was founder of the BJC. The award will be given in the field of journalism.
Journalist, columnist and writer Syed Badrul Ahsan won the award this year. On behalf of him, his family members received the award.
Badrul Ahsan worked at The Bangladesh Observer (Now defunct), The New Nation, The Morning Sun, News Today, New Age, the Daily Star, Daily Observer, Asian Age and weekly Dhaka Courier.
