CHATTOGRAM, Aug 27, 2023 (BSS)-Three police constables were killed and three others injured as a train hit a pickup van at Fakirhat rail crossing under Sitakunda Upazila of the district this afternoon.

The deceased are: Mizan, Iskandar and Hossain - all the police constables of Sitakunda thana under district police.

The injured cops are: Sujan Sharma, Sub-inspector (SI) of Sitakunda thana, van driver constable Samir Das and local UP member Shahadat Hossain.

The accident took place as a Chattogram-bound inter-city Sonar Bangla Express train crossing Salimpur-Fakirhat rail crossing at 12:30 pm from Dhaka hit the police van when the police van went on the railway track at the said rail crossing under Sitakunda upazila of the district, said Md Tofayel Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge of Sitakunda thana.

The police van was severely damaged when it was hit that left a police constable Mizan was killed on the spot, five others received injury.
Locals and police brought them to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where the attending doctors declared police constables Iskandar and Hossain dead after admission, said Chattogram Medical College Police Outpost in-charge Nurul Alam Ashek.

Three injured have been admitted to different wards of the hospital, he added.

Police said that the gate man of the railway crossing, Bipu, was not at the spot and the signal bamboo was not hoisted. Three weapons (shotguns) of the policemen were broken, 16 rounds of shotgun ammunition were recovered but pistol ammunition issued in the name of SI Sujan Sharma was not recovered, police said.
