DHAKA, Sept 5, 2023 (BSS) - Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq today said that Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan has broken discipline by making a statement regarding Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus.
"Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan is a deputy attorney general in charge of the Attorney General's Office. If he speaks to the press, he should talk either after his resignation or taking the Attorney General's permission. He didn't do that. He broke the discipline," he said.
The minister was talking to journalists after joining a discussion organized by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) on Cyber Security Act at the National Press Club here.
He said action is being taken against DAG Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan.
Earlier, while protesting the recent letter from global leaders to the prime minister over trial proceedings against Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, DAG Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan, on Monday, said that he decided not to sign a statement that is being prepared by the attorney general's office over Dr Yunus issue.
While talking to the reporters in front of the High Court's annex building, DAG Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan claimed that the attorney general's office is supposed to issue a protest statement regarding the case of Yunus.
Imran also said that everyone working in the attorney general's office has been notified to sign it.
"I have decided not to sign this statement. This is my own thought. I agree with the statement (open letter of world leaders)," he added.
Meanwhile, Attorney General (AG) AM Amin Uddin today said that no direction or notice for statement against Yunus was given from the attorney general's office.
DAG Imran gave statement over Yunus's matter to please any party and he must have had a purpose here, AG Amin Uddin said in reply to a query of the reporters in his office here.
The Attorney General also said: "If someone asked him (Imran) to sign the statement, he should have asked me as I am the Attorney General. But he didn't say anything to me. Deputy Attorney General Imran was on leave yesterday (Monday). But he briefed directly reporters after wearing court's uniform," he said.
In response to the question whether any action will be taken against DAG Imran, the AG said: "I am not his appointing authority. So, I can't say anything about it."
More than 160 global leaders including over 100 Nobel Laureates in an open letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 28 respectfully asked the PM to suspend the current judicial proceedings against Prof Yunus immediately.
