DHAKA, Oct 5, 2023 (BSS)- Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud today said political stability is needed to continue the country’s economic prosperity.
“The size of Bangladesh economy has grown multi-dimensionally. If the money market and capital market work together and if the money market is free from fraud then the prosperity of the country will be enhanced. Political stability is also needed to continue the economic progress,” he said.
The minister said this while addressing a seminar titled ‘Capital Market for Sustainable Finance’ orgainsed by Bangladesh Merchant Bankers Association (BMBA) marking the World Investor Week 2023 at an auditorium of Commerce Faculty at Dhaka University.
Dr Hasan said Pakistan was on the verge of bankruptcy a few days ago and militancy has risen up due to lack of political instability there. Bangladesh surpassed Pakistan in every index many years ago including social, economic and healthcare; he said adding this was happened due to magical leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The minister said, “In fact, many have no idea how much our economy has grown up during the last 15 years. A $100 billion economy has now grown to nearly a $1 trillion economy; means five times has been increased. Our budget has now increased 12 times from Taka 88,000 crore in 2008-09 financial year to Taka 7,73,675 crore during current fiscal. The per capita income is now $2,859.”
After the programme, the minister replied queries of reporters on recent statement of Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
He said Awami League believes in the power of people and the countrymen would select who will run the state. Awami League has always formed the government as per verdict of the countrymen, he added.
Hasan Mahmud said BNP and some other anti-state elements have come up some issues of the country to foreigners. They gave the scope to the foreigners to talk about the country’s internal issues.
He said the countrymen has witnessed that how the Prime Minister of Bangladesh has discussed and exchanged greetings with the global leaders in G-20 summit held in India recently. She also exchanged greetings with the US President Joe Biden in the summit, he said, adding the Premier also held a meeting with the security advisor of the US during her recent visit to USA.
All those prove the relations between the two countries, he said adding, “Our relation with the USA are very fantastic and we are working to strengthen the relation”.
He said the AL general secretary said about good relations with all. “We have good relations with Delhi, Washington and Brussels. The country is moving ahead through keeping good relations with all,” said Hasan Mahmud.
He said the upcoming election will be held on time with the huge participation of the countrymen.
Chairman of BSEC Prof. Shibly Rubayat Ul-Islam attended the function as special guest while BMBA president Md. Sayadur Rahman was in the chair. Secretary General of BMBA Md. Riyad Matin presented the keynote paper.
