Jamaat-e Islami's registration to remain illegal: SC

DHAKA, Nov 19, 2023 (BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today
upheld the High Court judgment that declared Jamaat-e Islami's registration
as a political party, illegal.

A six-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan
today passed the order as 'dismissal for default', as the defendants'
principal lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali and Advocate-On-Record Zainul Abedin didn't
appear before the court today and still pleaded for time.

Due to the order, the judgment given by the High Court declaring the
registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami as a political party, illegal will
remain effective.

However, the apex court did not pass any order on the contempt of court
petition against the Jamaat leaders and the petition seeking ban on the
party's political programme. According to the court, as the appeal was
dismissed there is no need to apply for injunction.

The High Court after holding hearing on a writ petition filed by 25 people
including then secretary general of Bangladesh Tariqat Federation, Rezaul
Haque Chandpuri, declared the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami as a political
party illegal on August 1, 2013.

Jamaat appealed against the judgment as the full text of the High Court
judgment was released on November 2, 2013.
