DHAKA, July 3, 2024(BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury today called for united efforts of all concerned to ensure fair use of marine resources.
“The success in blue economy sector depends on mutual cooperation and partnership. If the government, development partners, private sector and international community work together, it is possible to ensure the fair use of marine resources,” she said.
The speaker made the call while addressing a conference titled 'International Conference on Ocean Prosperity: Catalyzing Blue Economy in Bangladesh' at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the capital as the chief guest, a press release said.
She underscored the need for proper investment in research and development sector to tap the full potential of the blue economy.
She said the private enterprise in blue economy can significantly increase knowledge and technological capacity.
Dr Shirin said the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman established the first marine research institute in 1973 realizing the importance of marine resources.
He had enacted 'The Territorial Waters and Maritime Zones Act' in 1974, which was an important step, she added.
Noting that Bangladesh has made significant progress under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, she said that the premier has secured the sovereignty of Bangladesh over the vast area of ??the Bay of Bengal.
